Fierce Moments Recap:

Last week we asked you to share your favorite fierce moment in the Crewel World series. We had a lot of wonderful entries, but Jessica's really stood out.

She wrote a song, A Permanent Decision, in honor of a hard choice Adelice had to make at the end of Crewel. Here's a peak at her beautiful entry:

Feel the silence rippling through the room
What to say, what to do, what to think?
All eyes looking at me,
letting me know that it's all my choice.

What to say, what to do, what to think
when your world is falling apart around you?
What to say, what to do, what to think
when you're about to lose everything?
What to say, what to do, what to think
when you've got to make a choice
that will change your life forever?
But what would happen if you don't?

The unknown settles in my skin
What to say, what to do, what to think?
Looking at strands, colorful around me,
I know I'm running out of time

To view the rest of the song, go look at her post on her blog!

Strange Bedfellows: A Cormac and Maela prequel short

Strange Bedfellows:
A Cormac and Maela prequel short

Intrigue and deception lies behind every closed door in Arras.

In this original, mature short, discover the secret that turned Maela from ambitious girl to vindictive Spinster.

The room was spare, as was his typical style.  Some might consider it too cold with the black marble tiles veined with silver and the austere gray walls, but his bed was warm.  It always was and he never minded if Maela lingered there.  She wondered if the room changed when other officials visited, but as Ambassador she thought it wasn’t unlikely that the room was his and his alone even when he wasn’t around.
Cormac rarely smoked but tonight he puffed on a cigarette that she’d offered him.  His hand skimmed her hair as they lay in the silence that accompanies such acts.  Maela didn’t dare to think it meant he loved her.
Even though she hoped it did.
“Are you staying?” she murmured.  Her voice was low and husky mirroring the atmosphere of his chambers.
“I have an inspection and some business in the...sector,” he replied.  His answer was guarded.  She liked to think he was protecting her and not that he didn’t care for her to know the details.
Maela propped herself up on her elbow and watched him.  She tried to keep it from looking too loving, but she knew she was failing. “Listen.  I’ve heard they’re looking for a new Crewel assistant.”
“I assume you have someone in mind?”
She couldn’t help but smile down at him.  He knew her too well.
“I could do it,” she said.  “I want to do it.  If I have to spend one more minute—”
“I don’t decide these things,” he stopped her.
   “You have influence,” Maela said.
“And you’re going to persuade me,” he guessed.
“I can be very persuasive.” Her words were a promise, and she fulfilled them with her lips, pushing his hand back to free his mouth from the cigarette.  The kiss held the kind of intensity reserved for passionate embraces or for the aforementioned persuasion she claimed to offer.  Cormac let her kiss him, knowing full well this was one topic on which he couldn’t be convinced.
Still as she pulled back and her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, loose and free for once, he considered it.  It wouldn’t be the first time a Spinster had risen in the ranks, and Maela was a force to be reckoned with.  Of course, there was the tiny matter of her talent.
She had all the makings of a Spinster, a natural gift for seeing the weave, but Cormac understood that her true skills lay in much less scrupulous talents.  Like persuasion.  It was that which had first attracted him to her as more than just another pretty face.  The affair had begun not long afterwards.
But Cormac knew as her fingers traced the line of his jaw that things had gone on too long.  Expectations now accompanied their rendezvouses.
“You’re right,” he began, looking for the right words to accompany a sentiment he was sure she didn’t want to hear, “I can use my influence, but Maela, do you really think you’re made for the high tower?  It’s lonely work.”
“It’s powerful work,” she corrected him.  “You know I could do it.”
Cormac pushed himself up, dropping the remains of the cigarette into a small crystal bowl on his nightstand.  He braced himself against the cool leather of his headboard.  “You can’t handle the responsibility.”
Even in the dimly lit room, he saw her eyes flash.  The lavender grew dark as her pupils contracted with the fury of his slight.
“You don’t want to,” he tried to add, but he sensed it wouldn’t appease her.
“So I should just weave a thunderstorm and be happy about it?” she snapped.  “I was cut out for more than that, Cormac. We both know that.”
“There’s no denying your ambition.  I’ll grant you that.”
“I can be influenced,” she said.  “Much more than Loricel.  You won’t have to fight with me on every single loose thread in Arras.”
It was a promising line of argument, but one they both knew she would lose.
“Is it because she won’t work with me?” Maela asked in a flat voice.
“Loricel will work with who I tell her to work with,” Cormac said.
“Then tell her to work with me.” Her voice softened on the suggestion, and she widened her eyes.
“Don’t play the innocent with me, Maela.  I know you better than that.”
“Then you know I’m the right person to work with the Guild.  I’m more malleable to your needs.”
Maela was, indeed, flexible with her own morality.  After all, she was in bed with him, but it was this precise disregard for the carefully structured rules of the Coventry that gave him pause.  Maela could be a powerful ally, but it didn’t take much to convert a friend to an enemy.  And when he ended their affair, something he was already calculating, she’d become just that.  Her temper didn’t add to her list of better qualities.  She was already far too worked up.
“They’re looking for someone to train the new Eligibles,” he said, trying to divert her attention.
“I’m not interested in babysitting.  I want a real job.”
To do what, Cormac wondered.  Maela’s passionate side got in the way of her seeing that ambition was a danger to the mantle - and to the men that ran it.
“There’s another option,” Maela said.  She hesitated, biting the flesh of her lower lip.  Pushing herself up, she wrapped a sheet around her and stared him down, waiting for him to press her for it.  She wasn’t sure she had the guts to offer it on her own.
  “Yes?” he finally asked.
“You need a wife,” she suggested.
Cormac suddenly wished he had a drink.
“You won’t rise above Ambassador without one,” she pointed out.
“I’m a widower,” he reminded her.
“When? Twenty years ago?  Any sympathy you enjoyed for that is long past.”  Maela’s pulse was roaring in her ears.  A warning to slow down or back up, but she pushed on, sensing she was losing the chance to convince him.
“So you want to marry me?” he asked.  Even the question was enough to force him to his feet to search for the decanter of bourbon stocked in his chambers.  He found it before she worked up the courage to continue her argument and he poured something into a cut glass tumbler.
Cormac didn’t like drinking at this moment.  It showed more than he wanted Maela to see.  Particularly that she was making him nervous, a fact he was sure she would twist in her own mind.
“We have fun together,” she said at last.
“Fun?” he echoed, amusement coloring his voice.  “That’s one way of putting it.”
Maela wanted to fall back on the bed and draw the sheet over his face, but she stayed put and met his eyes.
“We’re not so different.” Her voice was soft, and he knew then that things had indeed gone too far.  This wasn’t ambition speaking now, it was love.
It wasn’t the first time that he stepped over the line with a Spinster, and he was sure it wouldn’t be the last.  But very few Spinsters were as formidable as Maela.  It didn’t sit well with him.
   It also didn’t change anything.
“I’m not looking for a wife,” Cormac told her.
Maela sucked in a long breath and let it whistle past her lips. She needed to stay in control of the situation.
“I have a long rebound in the morning,” Cormac said.  It was permission for her to abandon the topic - or maybe just a command.
“When will you be back?” she asked.
Arras, she wasn’t going to let this go.
“Soon,” he told her.  It was noncommittal.
“I’ll be here.” It was stupid thing to say.  Of course, she would be here.  Where else would she go?  But Cormac’s dismissal of her - and of this topic- was evident in his face.
He moved to the wardrobe and pulled out a few items that he would need to travel tomorrow.  Mentally he made a note to call Hannox for more supplies.  He wouldn’t be coming back to the Western Coventry anytime soon, something he hadn’t accounted for in his preparations.  But he felt sure he would need to stay in Cypress longer than he’d expected.
Maela took the opportunity to slip back into her gown.  She left her hair down.  She dared anyone in the halls to make a comment at her appearance this late at night.  In fact, she hoped they would.  The ball of fury building her in chest and throat needed to be loosened, and Cormac wasn’t the person to unleash it on.
He kept to his preparations as she slipped towards the door, but Maela wasn’t letting him off so easily.  She sauntered to the wardrobe and leaned against it.  Her silhouette framed by the shadows the moon cast through the windows of his quarters was long and sinuous.
“Have a good trip,” she said.  Her hands reached out and brushed his chest, urging him to pay attention to her.  When he didn’t she reached out once more but this time she lightly scraped his flesh with her lacquered red nails.
He turned to her and let his hands find her waist.  Pulling her to him, he caught a lock of her smooth hair and ran it between his thumb and index finger.  He’d miss watching it fall over her face.  He kissed her roughly and his breath, heavy with alcohol, was like fire on her mouth.
She didn’t stay to watch him pack.  She knew the kiss meant goodbye.
He had never bothered kissing her that way before.

Secret Cover Contest and Sitewarming Party

If you follow me on twitter then you know that I'm waiting (impatiently) to share my cover with the world.  Secretly I've had it since October and haven't been able to share it with anyone.  So whenever someone asks to use the cover for an interview or a post I have to say no.  Word is that we'll finally be sharing the cover in February, but why not have some fun until then?

Also I promised a sitewarming party when I got situated, so let's kill two birds with one stone.  A cover contest site-warming party!  That's right, you create a cover that you think would be perfect for CREWEL, and I'll narrow it down and we'll all vote on the winner.

And what do you win?  A Kobo ereader!

Now full disclosure here:  I bought the kobo last fall and then I was given a Kindle, and I never use the Kobo.  I read something on it once.  So it is almost-new.

But that kinda sucks, right?

Well, for funsies I will include the first chapter of CREWEL on it.  That sound better?

I'll be accepting entries in the cover contest from now until Feb. 13th at 11:59 PM CST. Then we'll vote and narrow and declare a winner. Here are the rules and the details:

Please do not use copyrighted images!  You can use creative commons or istockphoto or your own vivid imagination, but don't infringe on other people's work :)  Please and thank you.

You can email me your entry at genn at genniferalbin dot com, and I will post them in a gallery here.

Have fun!

Want some inspiration for the CREWEL storyline?  Check out my pinterest board, which I update daily!

Crewel's Big Date!

So I have a release date, and since I just got word that the manuscript is in copy edits (!), I can share that date with you.  If you're interested, I revealed that date in an interview at A Still and Quiet Madness....

Friday Five: Where I've Been Edition

So I promised you updates from New York and then I went and got ridiculously sick on the trip with a sinus infection.  Now if you follow me on twitter or are my Facebook friend, I did post some pics through the week.

So here's the trip in a nutshell.

1.  Falafel, and indian, and haute cuisine - oh my!  We ate so much good food from the amazing falafel at Taim to a business lunch at ABC Kitchen to dinner with Mollie at Little Giant.  Food back home is feel pretty boring.

2.  My first Broadway play.  I've been to some pretty amazing theaters before including the Santa Fe Opera and the Kennedy Center, but this was my very first show on Broadway and I chose Mary Poppins.  It was magical.

3.  I met up with Kody Keplinger, author of one of my favorite books - The DUFF, and had some eggs, discussed feminism and fairytales, and gushed about Hayao Miyazaki.

4.  The outfit.  I told you all about the search for the perfect outfit for my meetings.  I wanted them to get a sense of who I was rather than putting on a suit.  Not that I don't ever wear a suit, but let's face it I write from Starbucks most days.  I didn't wear my sunglasses to the meeting though!

5.  So how did the meetings go?  Well, I might have a release date, which I'll share as soon as I turn in these edits and it feels more possible!  I got to see the Foundry offices, which are as swanky as you would expect, and meet my foreign co-agent, who is lovely and the rest of the team.  Then I headed over to FSG with Mollie for a meet and greet.  I could spend a whole post regaling you with how awesome they were, but let me just say CREWEL is in very good hands.  Despite being in front of 20 people who will help decide my book's fate, the husband said I did well.  We followed the meeting up with some editor/author time and then lunch at ABC Kitchen.  In all my excitement, I forgot to get more pictures.  But I'll definitely get some more next trip.

All in all, worth the sinus infection!

Das Buch!

I know I already tweeted this, but I had to share that the Crewel trilogy has sold to German publisher Egmont INK, a new YA imprint with some pretty amazing titles coming out this year and next.  I'm so thrilled to be joining the INK team!

A Contractual Obligation

As I promised, I dragged my husband out to take pictures when I signed my contract.  As luck would have it, I did my hair that morning and as soon as we picked up the copies of the contract, I was caught in a deluge of rain.  So I look like a drowned cat in most of them, but, hey, at least I'm a happy drowned cat.

Things I didn't expect about contracts.  They are long.  Ok, I expected that, but I had to sign 3 copies of each contract for all 3 books, meaning I signed 9 times, and the contracts totaled 306 pages!  That's as long as my book.

Or how many questions I would have.  I mean, it's just the next three years of my life!  Thank goodness for my fabulous agent and Foundry's legal advisers.

Or how giddy I would feel when I packed up all 4 and a half pounds of contractual obligation and shipped it off to New York.  It feels just like the hours following my wedding - exciting and joyful and surreal.  But just like that day, there's a signed reminder that it really happened.

It really happened!

Turkish Delight

I was so excited to wake up to my contract arriving Friday morning (more on that later), and then I got more great news!  Crewel has sold Turkish rights in a 3 book deal to Dogan Egmont.  I can't wait to work with their fantastic team to bring Adelice's story to Turkey!

I'm getting a Brazilian and Crewel in pictures

book deal that is!  I got word yesterday that the Crewel trilogy will be published in Brazil by Agir.

And you all thought I was going TMI on you!

And I thought it was time to give you a taste of Crewel, because I can't wait to share Adelice's story with you.

The Spanish Acquisition

Hola! Me llamo es Gennifer Albin y mi libro serĂ¡ publicado por Alfaguara en Espana.

I think that says "Hi! My name is Gennifer Albin and my book will be published by Alfaguara in Spain," but my high school Spanish may be failing me.  And hopefully I'll be needing it very soon.  More on that to come!

An American Author in London

I am so happy excited thrilled to announce we've settled an auction for the UK rights to CREWEL, and I'm now a member of the Faber family!  Faber has amazing things planned for the series, and I couldn't be more pleased.
And my apologies for the desecration I'm about to commit, but this is like my all-time favorite song and doesn't it sound cool this way (also, perhaps, mildly inappropriate)?

Well, I saw Genn Albin walkin' with the queen
Doin' the authors of London
I saw Gennifer Albin walkin' with the queen
Doin' the authors of London
I saw Gennifer drinkin' a pina colada at Trader Vic's
And her hair was perfect

Aaahoo! Authors of London
Draw blood
Aaahoo! Authors of London

Tea and scones all around!

Part 1: I Demand You Write a Book

Part 1:  I Demand You Write a Book
Part 2:  How WriteOnCon Changed My Life in Less than a Week (coming 5/9)
Part 3:  Announcing the Agent (hopefully coming 5/10)

I'm going to preface this by saying, I still have not made a decision about what agent I will go with as I'm waiting to hear back from a few, but Monday is the deadline, so I thought I could write this part of the story.

Let's start at the beginning - a very good place to start.  I always meant to write.  Abandoned manuscripts litter my past; most of them no longer than a few pages.  I thought I'd write in grad school, but, um, that was so not possible.  Fast forward to last June and a telephone call from my mother-in-law.

After she asked about the kids (I had a 2 year-old and a newborn at the time), she dropped this bomb on me:

"I demand you write a book."

Color me flabbergasted.  Hello!  I had a baby and a toddler, and I already wrote a successful parenting blog. I was totally offended.  But she knows me too well.  Her comment really ate at me.  So, just as she planned, I started to write a book.

I never got past 50 pages with it, and those 50 pages were rewritten several times.  My husband began to tease me that my obit would read: "Author of the 20 most promising first chapters ever written."

And then in August inspiration struck, and I wrote one page - a prologue that remains pretty much in tact to this day.  And then a few days later tragedy struck.  I dumped an entire glass of water on my mac and fried it beyond repair.  Thankfully I had sent the prologue to a friend, but I no longer had a way to work.  I worked on my husband's PC while my baby slept and wrote 15k of a very different version of the novel, but it wasn't working, so I stopped writing.

Then I heard about NaNoWriMo, I thought: "I'm going to do this."  I told my husband and he agreed to help.  On November 1st, I started on page one.  At first I worked at night with my daughter asleep on my lap, typing one-handed well past midnight.  Soon I decided I needed to go out to work.  I started going to the library and using the public computers and my flash drive.  I had to work in seventy minute increments because of the time limits, but I pressed on and on November 30th, I crossed the 50k finish line.  And yes, I cried.

***My awesome CP just reminded me to add that my mother-in-law bought me a new netbook for Christmas to show how proud she was.  It's purple and awesome.  She's awesome.

The next thing I did was print it out and start to read.  It. Was. A. Mess.  The dialogue was good but everything else sucked.  There was no world building or character development and the plot was fuzzy at best.  Thankfully I have awesome critique partners who brainstormed a lot with me.  By the the beginning of March, I had a finished second draft.  It was better but still lacking.  I built more and fleshed out.  The pages of that hard copy look like they're bleeding.  I drank a lot of coffee (I now have a Starbucks gold card).  I finished it around April 15th.  What a great day.  I sent it off to my critique partners, and printed it out for my husband to read.

And then on April 22nd, I did something that would change my life....

to be continued...
